How To Get Me To UNSUBSCRIBE!
I did some more of my virtual house cleaning the other day. This time I went through my email and unsubscribed from about 40 newsletters.
The criteria I was using was pretty simple. Yet it amazed me at how many marketers fail to do the “simple things”. So I wanted to share my criteria in hopes that others might be able to avoid these
blunders.
So here is my list of “How to get me to unsubscribe”
1) Crappy content
I’ve been at this game for a while folks, and I can smell PLR sent to me as a substitute for real content a mile away. If you don’t have anything of your own to share, then why are bothering?
I can forgive bad spelling. I can forgive terrible grammar. I cannot forgive crappy content.
2) Treating me like an ATM
A sales pitch is not unique content. Nor is it interesting.
Yes, I understand that our goal is to make money. But, develop a relationship with me before you start asking me to pull out my wallet. Give me value UP FRONT!
If every email I get from you is a sales pitch, I will use the unsubscribe link.
3) Sending duplicate emails
There are two varieties of these emails. One is where a person sends out an email that is word for word the same as another marketer.
This happens when marketers are promoting the same product and they simply cut/paste an email that the product owner has provided for them.
This annoys me to no end.
The other variety is when I am on multiple lists for the same marketer and that marketer sends the same email to each list. So I get the same email for every list that I belong to for that marketer.
This is very easy to avoid and shows me that you don’t care enough to take a couple of extra minutes to do things right.
Results of both of these? Unsubscribe…
4) Oooops! Wrong Link
Am I the only person that this drives them nuts?
You get an email from a marketer and then a couple of hours later you get another mail explaining that they messed up and here is the correct link!
Is it that hard to test your email before you send it out? No.
If you do screw up a link in your mailing then include an extra special bonus or discount with the correction. Make it something that hurts YOU in the wallet and will teach you to take a few extra minutes to test your links next time.
Those are just a few of the things that will cause me to hit the
unsubscribe button pretty fast.
Next time I will write about ways to get me TO SUBSCRIBE to you list!

People unsubscribing is a part of doing business. It happens. But there are always things that we can do to help prevent mass leaving of our lists.
One of the easiest way to get me to unsubscribe is ues the F word to get your point across. All I can say to that guy is “learn the english laungage”. I don’t have it mastered yet myself but, even I can get my point across without it. All the millionares I know don’t use that word.
Another thing is, don’t try to tell me how stupid I am for not taking advantage of your great offer. When your using up my time that I could spend better doing something other than reading your long boring e-mails!
Not trying to step on any toes or hurt any feelings here if these people are on your list Michael but, just trying to give a word to the wise.
Hi Michael,
you hit the target with this email,
The worst time was when marketers was promoting mass control, over 20 marketers force me to unsubscribe. I received over 100 emails for that product. I was on Frank Kern newsletter so, I didn’t need all these emails 2, 3 and 4 emails an hour.
Nice topic!
Sylvain
Well I don’t know about unsubscribe on this one
but, If you send me two or three e-mails in the
same day I probably will deleat at least 2 of
them. Made the mistake of getting on all those
Christmas give away deals and have about 50
marketers sending me stuff every day now! So
don’t have time for everything that’s sent.
Some of these people don’t feel that they have
written an e-mail if it’s less than 500 words!
What’s up with that? Just get to the point!
I really do have a life other than reading your
long winded e-mails.
Maybe that’s just me. I hate to opt off of lists
because, some of their offers are really good and
every sence the Maven Matrix & Mass control came
out Smart marketers are giving information away.
Being a newbie and all I’m eating this stuff up
but, I still have a life and don’t have the time
to read everything.
Hi Michael, you mention that it is easy to avoid people getting duplicate content because they are on multiple email lists. I’m using AWeber and I know that I can use the Include/Exclude feature. Are there any other tricks out there?
I know I don’t want to bother my subscribers with duplicate emails just because they are on multiple lists. Thanks.
Cindy
Funny you should Cindy! I just finished recording a video on just that topic and will put it up soon. ![]()
I agree with Sylvian. Big ticket promotions are hitting our inboxes at a mile a minute, and sometimes the same email many times over.
I am so sick of it, that I have ‘unsubscribed’ nearly all of them. Nobody is sending me content any more. All I get from my newsletter subscriptions this year is promotions after promotions.
Where’s the value of that for me? I want quality information, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered subscribing in the first place.
If all you are going to send out to your lists is ‘buy this great new product’ from me junk, then of course you will lose your subscribers. That’s not what they signed up for in the first place is it.
Wish some of these so called ‘gurus’ would listen to their own advice - don’t you?
Shaz
I agree with all of the above.
It especially annoys me when a marketer tries to sell something to me within a day of subscribing - haven’t even established a relationship yet.
And then there’s the ones who spend 1/2 hour getting to the point, after telling you about their day, their families, etc etc. Just get to the point!
I usually give a new (to me) marketer a couple of chances, but if they don’t come up with some good stuff very soon, then it’s UNSUBSCRIBE!
Oh, the ones that annoy me the MOST, are the ones where the ‘unsubscribe’ doesn’t work, and there’s nowhere to contact them. Grr…
“Oh, the ones that annoy me the MOST, are the ones where the ‘unsubscribe’ doesn’t work, and there’s nowhere to contact them. Grr…”
How about the ones where the Unsubscribe link is fake and takes you to a sales page? Grrr….
Mark Henderson does something interesting. When you unsub from his list he has a “parting gift” download for you. ![]()
Hi, Michael,
I completely agree with the importance of doing at least the minimum testing to ensure that what we’re sending out passes a sanity check. Or, what we in the computer business call “The Smoke Test.” I’ve written a post for my blog that expands on the subject of how simple tests can keep us from looking like idiots:
http://johnthegeek.us/jtgblog/?p=17
We’re not going to be perfect, but it really doesn’t take that much extra effort to avoid a high percentage of common mistakes.
Hi Michael.
Thanks for the great tips. I have to admit that I got Lazy and began sending the same email to all my lists. Now, however, I’ll take the little bit of extra time to differentiate them, which was always my intent.
My own pet peeves when it comes to emails is when a marketer sends me 2 or 3 emails a day. I don’t have the time for that, not to mention they’re usually just different sales pitches. After a few days of this, I unsubscribe real quick!
Have a great weekend,
Terry.
Did you mean Mark Hendricks? I unsubscribed from his list recently and was pleasantly surprised to see his parting gift. Now there’s a nice twist! (It wasn’t enough to make me change my mind about unsubscribing because I simply decided I wasn’t interested in what he offers anymore, but it did make me feel kinda bad about it.)
Hi Michael
I totally agree with all you have said, here’s another one.
I recently purchased an excellent piece of software online and recommended it to a friend, she decided to also purchase so I joined the affiliate program, from the moment of joining I have received a list of all the products this guy sells, the affiliate link for each and every item and daily sales emails. No effort has been made to build a relationship, no value has been added and he made the presumption that I would be happy to sell unseen, untried products. He has been unsubscribed.
Hey Michael,
You are spot on with all those.
Before unsubscribing these days I do try to take into consideration who the sender is and what I signed up for and I don’t normally unsubscribe just if I get duplicate offer emails etc, but it does annoy me when there’s a new product launch and everyone and their mother sends me the same email about it.
And I hate it when I get bombarded with offers one after another too. I have one like that now but I am hanging in there as it’s the update list for the product I purchased a while back so if I cancel I will miss out on any future updates. What do ya do.
I once unsubscribed from a marketer’s list, and when I did I got the chance to fill in the box that asks why you are unsubscribing. I angrily filled in the box and was really surprised to get a reply from the marketer who wanted to find out more about why I felt the way I did.
After some more direct email correspondence with him, I realized I had over-reacted totally. I was so impressed that the marketer actually took the time to find out what was bothering me and graciously offered me some helpful advice for my business into the bargain, that I ended up signing back up to his list and joined his membership as well.
I’ve learned not to be so hasty in unsubscribing now.
I hate when I already purchase the product and still keep getting email about the same product to purchase.
Hi Michael!
I agree with you, and think you got it right.
Another very annoying thing is getting emails from the same guy (or gal) more or less every day.
It’s OK if the mail has real value, but some marketers don’t seem to understand that when they “bombard” you with emails you get tired of reading the same blah bla blah over and over again.
By the way: I see that your post is dated February 7th, how come you send it out now on May 21?
Cheers,

Good day Michael,
All very good peeves. Another one is when the emails are only three word sentences one after the other, or when the email is one big block of writing going right across the page. For me at lease it is one big eye strain.
Or how about all the [name here] etc. because someone has not bothered to personalize their emails correctly…
Looking forward to your (get me TO SUBSCRIBE to you list!)
email.
.
I have to say that every once and a while I clean house
so to speak, I get tired of looking in my inbox every Tuesday and seeing 70-100 emails because of all the product launches for that day, and the repetative emails are a nuisance, come on get a life and filter your emails so you don’t send me 6 emails with the same subject line. No wonder the guru’s have such big list with everyone being on multiple lists even my list would be huge.
This has made me think about my own list and the quality that I am providing them. I have already vowed to my list to not bombard them with sales pitch afer sales pitch and only suggest products that will actually help them. It has
also made me feel that I need to set up multiple emails with
nothing but pure content that only help them.
Hi Michael
Everything you mentioned is true. We are receiving a lot of emails with one person sending emails at one a day, another sending an email every two days etc. It gets tiring to a point and you have to say enough is enough. We really do not need that much email coming from one individual.
Good Job
John (Annette)
Michael,
I agree wholeheartedly with you. Another peeve is when you email a marketer with a question and he doesn’t get back with you. So you send another email with the same question and the same results. That deserves an unsubscribe in my mind.
Thanks

Well, Michael I passed this test and still have unsubscribes!
I’m looking forward to your next part - that is what will I do to have you to subscribe to my list!
Thanks.
